How to Prepare for Headshots

Headshots are an important part of any professional’s image. They can be used on your business card, website, LinkedIn profile, and even in job applications. If you’re not sure how to prepare for your headshot session, here are a few tips:

  1. Do your research. Before you book your session, take some time to research photographers in your area. Look for photographers who have experience shooting headshots and whose style you like. I am part of an elite group of headshot photographers who use a very specific lighting and posing style; however I can also match styles if you need fit in with other headshots on a company’s staff page. Not sure what you need, bring some inspiration images – photographers are very visual people!
  2. Choose the right outfit. Your outfit can make a big difference in your headshot. Choose something that is professional and flattering, and that makes you feel confident. Avoid wearing anything too busy or revealing. I always recommend neutrals and classic tones like black, white or blue because you want your face to be the star of the image; there’s no sense in paying for a headshot where everyone looks at your shirt or tie instead of your face, lol! There have been some rare exceptions to this rule, so if you really love it, bring it!
  3. Get a good night’s sleep. You want to look your best for your headshot, so make sure you get a good night’s sleep before your session. This will help you look more rested and alert.
  4. Eat a healthy breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast will give you energy and help you look your best. Avoid eating heavy or greasy foods 24 hours before your session.
  5. Arrive on time. Punctuality is important, so make sure you arrive on time for your headshot session. This will help you relax and get the most out of your session.
  6. Be yourself. The most important thing is to be yourself during your headshot session. I want to capture your personality, so don’t try to be someone you’re not. Fair warning: I am a goof behind the camera, so prepare for silliness!

Following these tips will help you prepare for your headshot session and get the best possible results.

Here are some additional tips to help you prepare for your headshot session:

  • Bring a variety of clothing options. This will give you more choices and help you find the perfect outfit for your headshot.
  • Consider bringing a friend or family member with you. They can help you choose your outfit, offer moral support, and take candid photos of you after your session.
  • Last, but certainly not least: Relax and have fun! Headshot sessions should be enjoyable, so relax and let your personality shine through.
